
How to Pick the Right Power for Your Bathroom Heater
When you’re picking out a waterproof infrared heater, it’s tempting to just go for the biggest number on the box. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. If you overdo it, you’re just wasting electricity. If you underdo it, you’re still shivering when you step out of the shower. It’s all about finding that sweet spot for your specific room. Getting the size right Think about your space. If you’ve got a tiny powder room—you know, those little bathrooms that are barely big enough to turn around in—something around 400W to 600W is plenty. If you put a massive heater in a tiny room, the thermostat will just keep clicking on and off every few seconds. It’s annoying, and it wears out the parts way faster than it should. For a standard-sized bathroom, you’re probably looking at 800W to 1200W. Now, if you’ve got one of those huge master baths, you might want a couple of 1000W units spread out. That way, you don’t end up with one scorching hot corner and a freezing cold floor on the other side of the room. Why infrared feels different These heaters work a bit differently than the old-school ones. Instead of trying to warm up all the air in the room (which takes forever), shortwave infrared beams the heat directly onto your skin and the surfaces around you. It’s instant. You feel it the second you flip the switch. Since this is for a bathroom, we’ve got to deal with steam. We seal the quartz tubes and the wiring with high-temp silicone or epoxy. It keeps the moisture out so you don’t have to worry about a short circuit while you’re getting ready for work. The “Hot Zone” problem There is a trade-off with high power. A 1500W lamp will definitely heat things up fast, but it creates a very intense “hot zone” right underneath it. If the lamp is too powerful for the room, it can actually get uncomfortable—or worse, it could damage your ceiling materials. You’ve got to balance the heat with how your room breathes. My best advice? Do a quick bit of math on the BTUs your room actually needs before you start wiring everything in. It keeps the heater running smoothly and stops the elements from burning out early.
