
Keeping Your Bathroom Warm Without the Blinding Light
Let’s talk about bathroom heaters. You know the ones—those infrared lamps that hit you with instant heat the second you flip the switch. They’re great, but there’s a catch. The kind of light these lamps use can actually be pretty harsh on the eyes. This is a real concern for babies, whose eyes aren’t as protected as ours. Nobody wants a heater that feels like a surgical lamp in their bathroom. The secret is in the filter. We don’t just throw a bulb in there. We use special coatings on the quartz glass and tweak the filament material to act as a filter. Standard halogen bulbs blast out a mix of everything—UV, bright white light, the works. We use a “band-pass” approach to block out those sharp blue wavelengths (the 400-500nm range) that cause that annoying glare and retinal stress. The goal isn’t to dim the light. If you just dim it, you lose the heat. Instead, we just strip away the parts of the light that make you squint. You get a soft, warm glow instead of a blinding flash. Heat vs. Light: The Balancing Act We want these lamps to pack a punch. By filling them with halogen gas, we can push the filament to higher temperatures. That’s how you get a room to warm up fast without it feeling like you’ve installed an industrial warehouse heater in your home. But here’s the thing: you can’t get something for nothing. Every time we add a coating to protect your eyes, we lose a tiny bit of heat. It’s a trade-off. If we go too heavy on the filtering, the lamp takes forever to actually warm the room. We spend a lot of time tweaking the voltage and the length of the filament to make sure it’s still plenty hot for a chilly morning. A couple of quick tips for the install: Make sure you wire these into their own dedicated circuit. These lamps pull a lot of power the moment they kick on. Also, double-check that your housing is high-quality. This is concentrated heat, and you don’t want your chassis warping because it can’t handle the temperature.
