
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam everywhere and the occasional direct splash from the shower. That’s why we build everything to the IPX4 splash-proof standard. It’s not just about slapping a plastic cover on the thing. It’s about making sure water and high-voltage electricity never, ever shake hands.
How we keep the water out
Here’s the thing: water loves to move. In a steamy bathroom, condensation doesn’t just sit there; it crawls. It finds the tiny gaps in the lamp housing and heads straight for the electrical contacts. To stop that, we use sealed gaskets and a kind of moisture-resistant “potting” compound at the connection points. It basically turns the wiring into a fortress. Instead of seeping in, the water just beads up and rolls right off. We also pick materials that can handle the “thermal shock”—that constant cycle of getting scorching hot and then cooling down—without cracking. If a seal ever does give out, your GFCI (the safety trip switch) should kick in immediately to cut the power.
The nuts and bolts of the wiring
We don’t use cheap wires here. We use heat-resistant cabling and specialized connectors so nothing frays or melts when things get hot. And we always ground the chassis. By tying the metal frame directly to the earth ground, any stray current has a safe place to go, meaning it doesn’t go through you. One quick tip: check your mounting brackets. They either need to be non-conductive or properly bonded. Also, don’t forget the junction box. If you use a cheap box that isn’t IPX4 rated, the fancy safety features inside the lamp don’t really matter.
The trade-offs
Nothing is perfect. Adding all those seals and protective casings makes the heater a bit bulkier. It takes up more space. Plus, there’s a small catch with the heat. The protective shield absorbs a tiny bit of the infrared radiation before it hits you. It’s not a dealbreaker, but you might need to bump up the lamp wattage a notch to get the room feeling exactly how you want it.
