
Making Your Outdoor Heaters Actually Smart
If you’ve ever tried to heat a pergola, you know the struggle. You turn on a heater, a breeze kicks in, and all that warmth just… vanishes. It’s frustrating. That’s why we stick with shortwave infrared. Instead of trying to warm up the air—which is a losing battle outdoors—these heaters beam heat directly onto you and your furniture. It feels like sitting in the sun on a crisp October day. But making these “smart” isn’t as simple as plugging them into a wall. Here is how we actually get it to work. The tricky part with the wiring You can’t just plug a 2000W heater into a little smart hub and hope for the best. You’ll fry the hub instantly. To fix this, we use heavy-duty relays. Think of the relay as the “muscle” and the smart switch as the “brain.” The switch sends a tiny signal, and the relay handles the heavy lifting of the power. And since we’re talking about the outdoors, we only use gear rated IPX4 or IP65. Why? Because pergola roofs leak. Humidity spikes. You don’t want your wiring shorting out the first time there’s a drizzle. Instant warmth The best thing about shortwave lamps is that they don’t need to “warm up.” You hit the button, and boom—you’re warm. Right now. We usually pair these with outdoor temperature sensors. It’s a great setup. If the air drops below 10°C, the heaters just kick in on their own. You don’t even have to get up from your chair to find your phone. A few things to watch out for Here is the catch: these things pull a lot of power. If you wire four of these 2kW heaters onto one single circuit, you’re going to trip your breaker the second they all turn on. It’s a mess. You’ll need to split the load across a few different circuits or maybe even upgrade your electrical panel. One last tip: just because the heaters are waterproof doesn’t mean the smart controllers are. Those logic boards are sensitive. Keep them tucked away in a NEMA-rated enclosure so a bit of rain doesn’t kill your whole system.
