
Picking the Right Infrared Heater for Your Bathroom
Nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. But here’s the thing: just grabbing the most powerful heater you can find isn’t the answer. If you get the wattage wrong, you’re either wasting money on your electric bill or shivering in a cold spot. If you’re using one of those IP66-rated heaters—the ones built for wet zones—you need to match the power to the actual size of your room.
Getting the power right
Think of it like this. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. It keeps things cozy without making the room feel like a sauna. If you go too big here, you’ll actually wear out the lamp faster. For your average-sized bathroom (4-8m²), you’ll probably want to jump up to an 800W or 1000W unit. Then you have the big ones—master baths or those open-concept wet rooms. Those need the heavy hitters, 1200W or more. In those big spaces, I usually suggest using a few different lamps in different zones so the heat doesn’t just disappear halfway across the room.
The deal with waterproof housing
Since these are IP66 rated, they can handle high-pressure water jets. That’s great for the shower, but there’s a trade-off. Because the unit is sealed tight to keep water out, the air doesn’t move around inside the fixture as much. This means the internal parts run a bit hotter. Just a heads-up: make sure your wiring is up to the task. You don’t want a junction box overheating because it’s struggling with the constant draw of a high-wattage lamp.
Finding the sweet spot
Efficiency isn’t about buying the cheapest, lowest-wattage option. It’s about balance. Put a 1500W lamp in a tiny closet and it’ll click on and off every two minutes. That constant cycling kills the relay. On the flip side, a 400W lamp in a massive room will just run 24/7 and never actually get the room warm. The goal is simple: you want the room to hit your favorite temperature in under five minutes. Just keep an eye on your breaker. Higher wattage means a heavier load on your electrical panel, so double-check your capacity before you start wiring up a bunch of lamps.
