
Keeping Your Class 100 Cleanroom Actually Clean
When you’re running a Class 100 (ISO 5) environment, there’s no such thing as “a little bit of dust.” One tiny flake of material shedding off a heating element and your whole batch is ruined. That’s the nightmare. Most standard heating lamps just aren’t built for this. They tend to outgas or flake apart as they heat up and cool down. To stop that from happening, we switched to high-purity synthetic quartz for our IR lamps.
Why the quartz matters
Here’s the thing: cheap glass “clouds” over time. We use fused silica with almost zero impurities, so that doesn’t happen. It can handle those sudden jumps in temperature without cracking under the pressure. Because the material is so pure, you don’t have to worry about volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or metallic bits floating into your air when the lamp hits peak heat. You just get clean, radiant heat. Your air filtration system can actually do its job instead of fighting your hardware.
Stopping dust before it starts
A lot of contamination actually starts at the connection points. To fix that, we use sealed terminations and electrodes that fit perfectly. No metallic dust leaking into your production zone. Plus, these lamps react fast. They hit temperature quickly, which means your HVAC system doesn’t have to work overtime to fight the ambient heat load in the room.
A few tips for installation
Now, a fair warning: high-purity quartz is more brittle than the borosilicate glass you might be used to. You can’t just manhandle these tubes. Be gentle. Use dedicated mounting brackets so you aren’t putting direct mechanical stress on the quartz. It’ll save you a lot of headaches. One more thing. If you’re running these at max wattage for hours on end, things get incredibly hot. Make sure your cooling fans and exhaust ducts are sized right. If the surrounding housing starts to off-gas because it’s overheating, it doesn’t matter how clean your lamp is—you’ve still got a contamination problem. Oh, and stick with high-temp Teflon-coated leads for the wiring. It keeps the whole setup tight and clean.
