How it actually works
Mold loves two things: stagnant air and damp walls. Standard heaters just warm up the air, which usually just pushes the moisture around without actually getting rid of it. Infrared is different. It uses shortwave radiation that doesn’t just stop at the air—it sinks into the surfaces of your walls and ceilings. Think of it like this: the energy hits the damp spots and basically “pushes” the trapped water out of the porous walls and into the air. Once that moisture is airborne, your vent can actually grab it and throw it outside. It keeps the walls dry enough that condensation never gets a chance to settle. And if there’s no condensation, the mold spores have nowhere to land.
A few things to watch out for
You can’t just throw any lamp into any fixture and call it a day. These shortwave lamps put out a lot of concentrated heat. If you put a high-wattage unit in a tiny enclosure, you’re asking for trouble—you could warp the housing or even fry your wiring. You’ve got to make sure the lamp’s power actually matches the size of your room. And here is the most important part:you need a fan. The lamp pushes the water out of the walls, but the fan is what clears it out. If you run the heat without the ventilation, you’re basically building a warm, humid sauna.
